Pet Medication Administration Tips
June 10, 2026
Giving medication to your pet isn’t always easy, but a few simple tricks can make the process less stressful for both of you!
• Wrapping your cat in a towel (“kitty burrito”) may help keep them secure and reduce stress.
• Pill pockets or a small amount of canned food can sometimes help disguise medication.
• Many dogs will take medication hidden in a favourite treat, pill pocket, or small amount of food.
• Always watch to ensure the medication is swallowed and not spit out later!
• Check with your veterinary team before crushing tablets or opening capsules, as some medications must be given whole.
• If approved, try hiding the medication in a different food your pet enjoys.
• For pills, you may need to administer them directly by placing the pill at the back of the tongue and gently holding the mouth closed until your pet swallows.
• For liquid medications, gently place the syringe in the side of the mouth, behind the canine teeth, and slowly administer the medication.
• Follow medication time with plenty of praise and a positive reward.
• If you’re struggling, contact your veterinary clinic. There may be alternative formulations available, such as flavoured liquids, chewable tablets, capsules, or compounded medications.
