Kennel Cough
February 13, 2026
We are seeing more cases of Kennel Cough lately which is very contagious between dogs. If you suspect your dog has Kennel Cough, please do not let them near other dogs.
Kennel cough spreads easily from dog to dog but is not contagious to people. Keep infected dogs away from others to help prevent spread.
Kennel cough (also called infectious tracheobronchitis or CIRD) is a common respiratory infection in dogs that causes a sudden, harsh, hacking cough that many describe like “something stuck in their throat.” It often lasts about 1–2 weeks and most dogs otherwise feel fine.
Dogs usually pick it up in crowded environments with lots of other pups, like kennels, groomers, shelters, daycare, or parks. Several bacteria and viruses can be involved, but the bacterial agent Bordetella bronchiseptica is a key culprit.
Harsh, persistent cough
Dry hacking cough
Sometimes gagging or retching
Most dogs stay active and alert, but the cough can be annoying and persistent.
Veterinarians usually diagnose it based on history and the characteristic cough. Most cases are mild and self-limiting — meaning they improve on their own. Comfort care or cough suppressants can help, and sometimes antibiotics are given to prevent complications like pneumonia.
If your dog has a fever, low appetite, lethargy, or the cough worsens instead of improving in a few days, call your vet — complications like pneumonia can occur.
